Our History

Refreshing Spring M.B. Church began with a vow, a calling and a vision. After much prayer and seeking divine guidance, on Saturday, June 26, 1993, Rev. James E. Marshall gathered a group of devoted Christians in his home and communicated the vision that the Lord had placed on his heart, and they believed it was God’s will to organize a church.

Therefore, on Friday, July 9, 1993, an Organizing Service was held at the Greater New Testament Missionary Baptist Church where the late Rev. Rubie Saulsberry presided as Moderator. This service resolved to establish a church with 12 members calling Rev. James E. Marshall as its Pastor and the “Refreshing Spring Missionary Baptist Church” was planted, and the mission of this Church was:

to preach the gospel
to worship God
witness to His saving grace; and
minister to the needs of people

The late Rev. August Minor, Union Hill M.B. Church, brought forth the Word: “The Business and Benediction of the Church” (Jude 24-25) -- We Serve a Big God!, and the journey of this great church was launched:

On Sunday, July 11, 1993, the Refreshing Spring M.B. Church held its first worship service at the Quality Inn Hotel in downtown Chicago and Pastor Marshall delivered a soul-stirring message: “The Conditions for Discipleship” (Matt. 16:24).
On September 3, 1993 we had our first baptisms, mother and son, Veronica Bright and Montsho Bright.
On May 4, 1994, ten months after organizing, the church purchased its future home at 400 South Cicero, Chicago, Illinois.
On February 5, 1995, the church temporarily moved to the Fountain-Jordan Shepherd Chapel, 418 South Cicero while its future home was under construction.
On Sunday, June 4, 1995 the Refreshing Spring Church, and a great host of family and friends, triumphantly journeyed to its church home – “We Entered into His Presence with Praise and Made a Joyful Noise Unto the LORD”.
On Sunday, September 12, 1999, the mortgage of the Refreshing Spring Church was burned.

As a church, we are committed to fulfilling Jesus' Great Commission as stated in Matthew 28:19-20. This mondate is not just for a few but all of us. Our mission is to GO and make disciples, and we are excited to share the steps we have taken to actively engage our community and enhance our worship experience.

Evangelism and outreach

Our Evangelism Ministry is actively reaching out to the community through direct outreach efforts, such as: -Food Giveaways at outdoor events: Providing for the physical needs of our community. -Service Advertisement: Promoting our worship services to ensure everyone knows they are welcome.

Youth Ministry - We believe in empowering our youth, and have taken significant steps to involve them in our services.

Media & Technology Ministry- To enhance our worship experience and outreach, we have significantly expanded our media capabilities:

Live Streaming: Broadcasting our services live to reach a broader audience.

Church Atmoshpere - Interior Design Improvements:

We have made several interior designs changes to create a warmer, more inviting church environment. These enhancements are just the beginning of our efforts to make our church a place where everyone feels welcome and loved.

Sunday School Reorganization:

Our Sunday school program has been reorganized to better meet the diverse needs or our congregation, ensuring that everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, has the opportunity to grow in their faith.

Together, let's continue to GO and make disciples, spreading the love and message of Jesus Christ, but letting our lights shine towards our communityand beyond.In Pastor Townsend words, "The best is yet to come. Let's enjoy the ride"!
